"The Black Eyed Peas have a rich tradition of lending their support to worthy causes," proclaims the website for the group’s Peapod Foundation – a nonprofit its members founded in 2004 to benefit impoverished children in Africa and foster children in Los Angeles.
Maybe these unfortunate youths can finally have leopard-print slippers and platform sandals of their own, now that Peas singer Fergie has signed a 2 million pound contract to product-place the Candie's fashion line in her music.
"With record sales in decline, you must find novel ways to make money out of the music," an executive at Interscope told the London Times. "Candie's will reach teens, but it has no say over exactly what Fergie will sing, or when. Fans might think she is just singing about candy. But it's got to work in the song. Fergie does not sing jingles."
The deal goes beyond your average commercial endorsement – Iron and Wine on an M&M commercial, for example, or Beyonce pushing L’Oreal. Fergie’s concerts will now be populated by "style advisors," who apparently go around re-dressing folks. Judging by the age of Fergie’s fans and the nature of Candie’s clothing, she’ll be transforming young girls into Bratz dolls left and right.
Such good news for people who hate those long music breaks in between advertisements on the radio! Ain’t it always the case that you come into a 50-minute block of car dealership spots right at the end? It will be interesting to see who follows in Fergie’s fashionable footsteps.
