Dirty Projectors cover entire Black Flag album

| | Comments (0)

Wow almighty, is Dirty Projectors’ Black Flag tribute album weird. I’m not sure what else to say about it except that it doesn’t seem like a middle-ground kind of thing. The topsy-turvyness will either blow you away or trigger an uncontrollable grimace.

What happened was, Projectors-man Dave Longstreth found an empty cassette case of Black Flag’s Damaged while helping his parents clean out the house he grew up in. Rather than scrambling wildly through the other scraps of his youth to locate the album, he decided to recreate it from memory using “the cheapest cassette four-track he could find.”

That being said, I can almost guarantee it sounds nothing like you expect, even if you too know Damaged note for note and/or regularly use cheap four-tracks.

With the help of Grizzly Bear, he turned the tunes into his own LP, Rise Above, to be released September 11 on Dead Oceans.
