Mavis Staples Live: Hope At The Hideout
Awash in her former family band’s trademark tremolo guitar, soul- music legend Mavis Staples delivers a powerful, funky, swampy live set that showcases her still-breathtaking vocals, able backing band and penchant for storytelling with a purpose. Hope at the Hideout aches with sadness but, even more so, brims with optimism and an unwavering determination to inspire goodness. The impressive array of material includes Staple Singers classic “Freedom Highway,” Buffalo Springfield’s ’60s-counterculture anthem “For What It’s Worth,” and plenty of civil-rights-era gospel classics such as “Eyes on the Prize,” “Wade in the Water,” “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” and “We Shall Not Be Moved,” many of which were featured on Staples’ last studio album, 2007 Anti- Records release We’ll Never Turn Back.
