Detroit-based trio The High Strung teamed up with producer David Newfeld (Broken Social Scene) for its fourth LP, Ode to the Inverse of the Dude, and together they've made an album that could knock the walls of Jericho down. With a battering-ram rhythm section, four-part harmonies and mountain-high synths, Ode’s melodrama is nearly symphonic. But Mars Volta-grade decadence is nowhere to be found, and instead of losing itself in a prog-rock no-man’s land, the trio sticks to a rollicking, structured series of melodies on grandiose numbers like “Bad With My Hands” and “Rope” and existential catch-phases like “Guilt is How I’m Built.” — Rachel Dovey
