With her piano-driven songs, 22-year-old Alva Leigh gives us an intimate peek into her life as she grapples with love, leavin’, memories and her southern roots. Southern imagery permeates many of the album’s 10 tracks—she sings about swamplands and Kudzu (“Fire in Your Belly,”) and heaven and the devil (“Scoundrel”). “Hurricane” is a boozy, trombone-laced romp through her bayou hometown after the storm. Leigh’s straightforward songwriting style and lingering vocals lend a world-weary sound to tracks like album closer “Quick Bright Things." — Kristen Callihan
