Paired with James Hannah, the duo springs a fantastical, glitzy brew that sparks by Chikudate’s whimsical vocal turns and soaring whoops. The lead track, “Transparence,” is sustained by a rhythmic backbone drumbeat that switches to a frantic electro-pop pulse in “Transparence (Aa Remix).” Without this percussive grounding, Asobi Seksu is almost too ethereal among what sound like Japanese chants and backdrop of hazy synths—fortunately, Transparence wraps up in a delicate and harmonious balance between the two. — Gage Henry
