Floating Action Floating Action

Seth Kauffman recorded most of Floating Action’s self-titled debut all by his lonesome, but the album sounds more like a crew of Motown session players just crashed a chichi cocktail party in some old hippie’s musty garage than just one dude fiddling around in a studio. Blending wobbly psychedelic guitar with girl-groupy backup vocals, exuberant horns and a dash of sitar, tracks like “Marie Claire” and “Dying Punch” lope along with Kauffman’s unhurried voice, making for a collection of songs that’s a little bit weirder and way more delightful than the sum of its parts. — Rachael Maddux
