James Maddock Sunrise on Avenue C

As the lead singer of the band Wood, James Maddock made a splash in 1999 with the album Songs from Stamford Hill, but the waters have been pretty still since then. Now, Maddock’s first solo album, Sunrise on Avenue C, picks up where he left off more than a decade ago. And it’s an admirable way for him to re-emerge: The English singer’s husky voice, coupled with alluring guitar and piano accompaniment, makes for tracks that are smooth and soothing (“Sunrise on Avenue C”), others fast-paced and rhythmic (“Hollow Love”). This Brit has spent the last 11 years wisely, and he has an album to show for it. — Anna Swindle
