The Rocketboys 20,000 Ghosts

Even without the name 20,000 Ghosts, much of The Rocketboys’ debut album would conjure a sense of haunting. It starts out lovely enough, with early tracks like “Take It From Me” immersing listeners in the smooth, soothing sound of lead singer Brandon Kinder’s lullaby-croon and the hypnotizing flow of piano throughout. But by the end, the off-beat drums of last track “I Saw A Stone” solidify a creeping sense of disquiet. Much like Sing, Bird, Sing, the band’s 2007 EP , Ghosts’ rich textures and well-crafted harmonies meld the tracks together into a cohesive, ebbing whole. — Anna Swindle
