A note from Venice Is Sinking:

Dear Paste VIP subscribers,

On the morning of June 19, 2009, the Georgia Theatre was very nearly destroyed by a fire that gutted the whole building. It was a beautiful, historic building that had just undergone extensive renovations, an important landmark to the Athens music scene and the heart of Athens’ thriving downtown. We have strong emotional ties to the Theatre because we recorded our third album as well as Wilmot “Wil” Greene, the owner of the Theatre, who helped conceptualize and finance this project. Sand & Lines stands as an acoustic document of a building that no longer exists.

We are offering up all profits from Sand & Lines to help with the rebuilding effort, but that’s not the only way you can help out. The Georgia Theatre has partnered with the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation to raise money for its rebuilding. They need to raise $3 million to restore the building to its former glory (as well as update it to 21st century building codes). Venice Is Sinking

With ambling percussion, layered strings and delicate vocal harmonies, Venice Is Sinking’s Sand & Lines showcases a live take on the quintet’s shape-shifting orchestral pop. The live recording lends intimacy to the songs, including originals and a transformative cover; the band molds Dolly Parton’s oft-covered “Jolene” into its own creation, combining bass and violin with somber harmonies. Recorded at the Georgia Theatre in the band’s hometown of Athens, Ga., proceeds from Sand & Line’s sales will go toward rebuilding the historic venue, which was gutted by fire last year. — Kristen Callihan
