Pitchfork: Today August 27, 2008 7:30 AM
The folks behind New Jersey freeform radio station WFMU, home of Tom Scharpling's quite excellent "The Best Show on WFMU", are assembling a library of legal MP3 downloads they're calling the Free Music Archive. The FMA will serve as a Creative Commons-protected resource for "music fans, webcasters, and podcasters to listen, download, and stream for free, with no restrictions, registration, or fees," according to the description on its website.
The Free Music Archive launches on November 1 later this year, and to give people a taste of its contents, WFMU is offering a free compilation of 21 tracks from the FMA. Titled Selected Sounds From the Free Music Archive Vol. 1 and featuring artwork by Greg Harrison, the sampler includes tunes by Suicide's Alan Vega with Oneida, Faust with Food for Animals, Dan Deacon, Lucky Dragons, Mahjongg, Clockcleaner, Citay, Fursaxa, Kinski, and Psychedelic Horseshit.
