Helena Bonham Carter and Anne Hathaway Join Alice In Wonderland

The Movie Blog October 7, 2008 5:35 PM

Alice In Wonderland 2-1Well how do you do! It appears Burton has anointed 2 Queens from the throngs in great wisdom. We learn today that Helena Bonham Carter and Anne Hathaway have been selected to play the red and white queens respectively in Alice In Wonderland. The news is made available to us thanks to our friends at IESB:

The movie, which stars Mia Wasikowska as Alice and Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, will use a combination of live action and performance-capture technology to tell the Lewis Carroll story.

Hathaway is playing the White Queen, a benevolent monarch who is deposed and banished by her sister, the Red Queen (Carter), who has an affinity for crying out, “Off with their heads!” The White Queen needs Alice to slay a creature known as the Bandersnatch.

It’s no surprise to see Helena Bonham Carter get the nod, Burton always puts his better half in his films. Helena Bonham Carter rocked the fuck out of Sweeney Todd and I certainly think she will make a wonderful wicked witch. This is a situation where I’m glad he made room for his lady; because I can think of few, if any, that are better for the part.

Having Anne Hathaway star as the white queen opposite Carter’s red is perfect.

Hathaway looks like a queen from a fairy tale wearing sweatpants. After Burton gets his crew of designers to measure and snip, ruffle and clip a custom hollywood gown for this porcelain goddess; watch out pants (level 10 boner en route). I couldn’t be happier with the selection of Hathaway, she is perfect for this.

One of my favorite things about Tim Burton’s direction is that he surrounds himself with people that are able to make his vision vibrant and real. From the clothing to the art direction; everything, always, looks, amazing. The man is a master of capturing scenes, and sets them up as if for a painting.

At the beginning of his career Burton shot the Disney short Frankenweenie. Now he returns as a seasoned time tested master-smith, set to take on one of history’s most treasured fairy tales. There’s not a better man for the job, and no better home than Disney. The runes are speaking good things, fortune favors this film.
