Werner Herzog Scores Career Achievement Award

The Movie Blog October 8, 2008 1:54 PM

HerzogWerner Herzog was recently rewarded with accolades from the International Documentary Accociation. We get the following scoop from our friends at IMDB:

German filmmaker Werner Herzog will be honored with a career achievement award by the International Documentary Association at a ceremony in Los Angeles in December. Herzog is recognized for his work on factual movies Grizzly Man, Little Dieter Needs to Fly and The White Diamond.

He says of the accolade, “Documentary filmmaking is called upon to find new answers. In these of redefinition, it is a particular honor for me to receive the award.”

Herzog is an interesting man. I can watch interviews with him all the live long day. He’ s as blunt as they come and always seems to blurt out an answer that takes his interviewer completely off guard. He answers questions the way he wants them to be answered, and not how others want to hear it. His words carry weight and his statements are loaded with meaning.

Herzog is a unique storyteller that has opens windows with his films and lets all look out. He champions the power of landscapes and directs them as he would actors. He lets the entirety of the image tell the story.

People who study film all seem to have a soft spot for Herzog, he is held in high regard and seen as a master smith. It’s no surprise to me that the IDA has chosen to honor him, and we join in the chorus of praise of Werner.

In case you doubt the greatness of this man - here is a video of him getting shot during an interview.
