New Music: Hudson Mowhawke: "Velvet Peel" [Stream]

Pitchfork: Downloads December 4, 2008 9:00 AM

This little chunk of jittery goodness has been out for a minute, showcasing the talents and playfulness of twenty-something wunderkind Hudson Mohawke. The pretty little track jerks along while pleasantly balancing techno, electro, hip-hop and, dare it be said, IDM. While Hud Mo declares it "emotronic", it's also part of a whole school of tunes that Pitchfork's own Martin Clark has adeptly labelled "wonky". The name does capture the feel of "Velvet Peel" as well of the work of some of Hud Mo's compadres: fellow Glaswegian Rustie, Montreal's Megasoid and San Fran's Lazer Sword, among others. Hudson Mohawke's first Warp release--a six tune EP called Polyfolk Dance that includes "Velvet Peel"-- will be available in January, to be followed up by a full-length before 2009 is up.

[Polyfolk Dance is due 01/19/09 on Warp]
