Tragedy Strikes Carter Family Once Again

The daughter of the late June Carter Cash was found dead in a parked bus off state Highway 12 in Clarksville, Tenn. late Friday afternoon along with a well-known Nashville session player.

Officials said Saturday that carbon monoxide from propane or kerosene heaters on the bus may have killed the two, though Ted Denny, spokesman for the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department said the deaths were “suspicious.” He also said emergency medical workers discovered various drug paraphernalia including needles and pipes near the bodies.

Emergency Medical Service Lt. Mell James said dispatchers got a call at 5:33 p.m. Friday about the bodies from an unidentified man. The exact cause of death has yet to be determined and autopsy results won’t be available until the middle of the week.

Investigators identified the victims as Rosie Nix Adams, the 45-year-old stepdaughter of late country legend Johnny Cash; and Jimmy Campbell, 40, a bluegrass fiddle player who had performed and recorded with genre legends like Bill Monroe and the Osbourne Brothers.

Adams—the daughter of June Carter Cash and her second husband, Richard “Rip” Nix—was a songwriter and had pursued a career in music.
