Utne, the nation's leading magazine of alternative ideas, has announced the nomination of Paste for an Utne Independent Press Award in the category of Design. Since 1989 these awards have showcased the best from the Independent Press in categories ranging from reporting excellence to personal life, cultural and international coverage.
“Paste stands out as an important independent media voice. We are pleased to honor your accomplishments with an Utne Independent Press Award nomination," said Editor Jay Walljasper.
Tying the look of the magazine to its high-quality content has been at the heart of Paste’s artistic mission since the beginning. Publisher Nick Purdy and Editor Josh Jackson asked Art Director José Reyes to combine folk art and Art Deco, and Reyes merged the two into a style different from that of any publication they had ever seen. The unique “Folk-Deco” design was adopted, once again setting Paste apart from other music publications.
“When I work with Paste,” Reyes told Georgia Magazine, “I approach features differently in every issue. It helps give the magazine a tactile feel. Content and concept drive everything."
The Utne Independent Press Awards (click for a list of nominees), previously known as The Utne Reader Alternative Press Awards, recognize excellence in alternative and independent publishing. Utne’s editors select nominee publications through their extensive reading process and careful examination, rather than a competition requiring entry forms and fees. In this way, Utne honors the efforts of small, sometimes unnoticed publications that provide innovative, thought-provoking perspectives often ignored or overlooked by mass media.
