In April, Crank! is releasing One Jug of Wine, Two Vessels, a Bright Eyes / Neva Dinova split EP.
The label has launched a contest where 10 winners will receive the first 10 available limited-edition, hand-numbered, specially packaged 10" One Jug records right off the press. To sign up for the contest check out crankthis.com.
The album—actually more of a collaboration than a straight split/EP—features six new songs. Both bands play on each other's tunes. Conor Oberst plays some guitar and sings back-up vocals on the Neva songs, and Neva Dinova plays and sings some back-up on the Bright Eyes tunes. The EP was recorded by Oberst and Jake Bellows. Mike Mogus mixed it and brought in a few side players to add some final touches. As it turns out, this Oberst/Dinova collaboration has been in the works for a while.
"I think it was 1996 when [Connor and I] met for the first time," said Dinova. "We played a show with Norman Bailor and Commander Venus and I forgot the words to one of our songs. Conor was in the audience and hollered out the next line of the song. I couldn't believe that someone in town knew our music. Maybe it was a year or two ago that we first talked about doing some kind of split or something."
And if anyone was wondering which group would win in a tug-of-war, Neva Dinaova's Jake Bellows offers his unparralled insight on the matter. "Bright Eyes may have more people," he says, "but we definitely weigh more and I think, if we continue to eat like we have been, we will come out victorious."
