Though it lacks the polish, majestic dynamic peaks and subtle beauty of the legendary Live at the Fillmore East, this double-disc recording from July 1970 (released by Epic/Legacy) is crackling with raw, youthful energy. As usual, Duane Allman is a bolt of lightning; an anomaly—a roman candle spouting a hail of sparks so intense he couldn't help but burn out before his time. The songs are the same ones you've heard before, but with this runaway freight train of a rock band, it doesn't matter. To borrow a phrase from Gregg Allman—the music'll hit you "like a sack of hoe handles."
