The Jammys, now entering its 4th year, is a grassroots music awards night, recognizing the best in live music performance.
This year's ceremony was held March 16 at the Theater at Madison Square Garden. The event was co-hosted by Grateful Dead drummer and world-percussion enthusiast, Mickey Hart and pedal-steel phenom Robert Randolph.
Black Crowes founders Chris and Rich Robinson performed together for the first time in over two years at the show. The brothers joined Gov't Mule for a surprise performance of the Black Crowes' "Sometimes Salvation." The reunion was one of a series of live sets during the five-hour show by an eclectic group of over 25 musicians—including Steve Winwood, Dr. John, Solomon Burke, Slick Rick, members of The Meters, Edie Brickel, Susan Tedeschi, and many more—who sat-in with bands associated with the improv-based "jam" scene.
The live collaborations featured:
* Soulive with the Harlem Gospel Choir and Reggie Watts (Maktub)
* Edie Brickell, Dickey Betts (Allman Brothers) and the Assembly of Dust (The Disco Biscuits with Slick Rick)
* Toots Hibbert (Toots and the Maytals), Dr. John, George Porter and Brian Stoltz (the Meters) and Matt Abts (Gov't Mule) * The Derek Trucks Band with Solomon Burke
* Susan Tedeschi and Dickey Betts
* Bass duet with Victor Wooten (Bela Fleck and the Flecktones) and Oteil Burbridge (Allman Brothers)
* String Cheese Incident and Perry Farrell
* Gov't Mule with The Black Crowes
Steve Winwood received the Lifetime Achievement Award and performed a medley of two of his classic hits, "Dear Mr. Fantasy" and "Low Spark of High Heeled Boys," just a day after his band Traffic was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The show closed in the early hours of Wednesday morning with a jam-session on Winwood's classic, "Gimme Some Lovin.'" Winwood was joined on stage by James Carter, Robert Randolph, Michael Kang (String Cheese Incident), Warren Haynes and Dickey Betts.
