For the past five years, the Brooklyn-based indie label, Ropeadope, has hosted the New Music Seminar, a concert featuring the label's biggest names and closest friends. The theme is always "no rules" as bands and musicians mix and match to create a long (4-hour), interlocking set with surprises at every turn.
Past participants have included Dave Matthews, Robert Randolph, John Medeski, Vernon Reid, John Scofield, Warren Haynes, Living Colour, Soulive, DJ Logic and Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra.
The show features plenty of improvisation, unique musical pairings and special guests. From Classical cellist Matt Haimovitz to underground hip-hop artist Lyrics Born; guitar virtuoso Charlie Hunter to beat master DJ Olive; from the jazz of downtown New York (Sex Mob) to the purveyors of improv in downtown Seattle (Critters Buggin); from the organ-and-drums-rock duo of Russo/Benevento to one of Philadelphia's most respected poets, Big Rich Medina, this fall’s lineup is as diverse as ever.
