Rare Daniel Johnston Recordings Available Online

On May 31, Twelve Daniel Johnston albums were made available on over 100 online music services, including iTunes, Rhapsody and Napster. On June 7, even more albums were made available. Ringtones of the lo-fi singer-songwriter are also in the works through several major cell-phone providers.

Johnston, a cult artist whose celebrity endorsements include Kurt Cobain, Tom Waits and Beck, has made a name for himself in his hometown of Austin, Texas, by giving out homemade tapes of his music to people he meets on the street. Until now, many of his recordings haven’t been available in a format other than cassette.
