According to Pitchforkmedia.com, Justin Hawkins, the king of glam falsetto vocals and lead singer of The Darkness, has announced his departure from the cult rock band in today’s issue of British tabloid The Sun. Hawkin’s says his exit was spurred by his growing addiction to cocaine, a habit that cost him ₤150,000 over the past three years.
Hawkins decided to leave The Darkness, which has released two successful albums since its inception in 2000, after he checked into rehab last August with the intention to permanently sober up- a feat he says he cannot accomplish in a rock and roll environment. Despite his absence, Hawkins speculates that his former band will play on with new bass player Richie Edwards taking over vocal duties. In the meantime, Hawkins plans on working on his solo project, British Whale, while spending time with his girlfriend.
