MySpace.com, the web's leading social networking site, has announced that it is partnering with international relief organization Oxfam and more than 20 artists from a variety of genres to assist in raising funds for and heightening awareness of the humanitarian crisis currently engulfing Sudan and Chad.
As MySpace's biggest philanthropic sponsorship to date, Rock for Darfur will bring together artists as disparate as Alice in Chains, Jamie Cullum, Bob Weir, and TV on the Radio (pictured above), each playing in a different city across North America on the night of October 21st. Participating artists have agreed to donate a portion of that night's profits to Oxfam, one of the world's leading humanitarian organizations.
The partnership will also sponsor a public service announcement starring Samuel L. Jackson, which will air in movie theatres before Twentieth Century Fox releases during October, and in various versions online and on broadcast and cable television.
The campaign will also extend online to the official Rock for Darfur Myspace page, myspace.com/RockForDarfur, which will feature video content and opportunities for site visitors to make online donations to the cause.
"More than three years of violence in Darfur has left half the region’s population dependent on international aid for survival, and there are untold thousands more who can't even be reached," Raymond C. Offenheiser, President of Oxfam America, explained in a statement. "Such a catastrophic humanitarian situation will not improve without an end to this brutal conflict. The people of Darfur urgently need-- and deserve-- our help. It's incredibly heartening that MySpace, which can rally millions of people to this cause, is working so hard to educate the world about this crisis."
