Flaming Lips, Color Me Badd Vie For Landmark

According to NewsOK.com, the website of Oklahoma City newspaper The Oklahoman, everyone’s favorite psychedelic hipsters, The Flaming Lips, might have their own landmark, albeit a small one, with Flaming Lips Alley. Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett has taken the initiative to name three streets after the city’s most recognized musicians, including country vocalist Vince Gill and 1930s jazz musician Charlie Christian. The alley, located between Sheridan Avenue and the Bricktown Canal, could give the city wider recognition to The Lips sprawling fan base said Tyler Peyton, owner of Lit, a lounge at the entrance of the alley in question.

Not everyone is as enthusiastic about the potential nomenclature, including Theresa Hickman, wife of local landowner French Hickman. Hickman denounced the trio’s moniker and suggested honoring 90s proto-boy band Color Me Badd, also Oklahoma City natives, with the alley title. She criticized The Flaming Lips’ 1993 breakout song “She Don’t Use Jelly,” but did not comment on Color Me Badd’s New Jack City Soundtrack contribution “I Wanna Sex You Up.”

The Flaming Lips are currently on tour in the United Kingdom and released their latest studio album, At War With The Mystics, last April on Warner Bros. Records.
