According to an obituary in The New York Times, jazz musician Alice Coltrane died Friday of respiratory failure at a Los Angeles hospital. She was 69 and had been in frail health for quite awhile.
For almost four decades, Coltrane managed the archive and estate of her late husband, the legendary saxophonist John Coltrane, who died of liver disease in 1967.
A noted pianist, organist and composer, she will be remembered for bringing the harp onto the jazz bandstand and for her spiritual leadership as a convert to Hinduism.
