In 2005, Zealous Records approached Oliver Wang of Soul-Sides.com and asked if he’d be interested in curating an album of classic soul tunes. At the time, it was a pioneering project approached to gauge the clout of a new music blogger, and in an optimistic move Zealous tacked “Volume One” onto the album’s eventual title, Zealous Records Presents Soul Sides Volume One.
Two years later, their optimism has paid off. With Volume One in its third pressing, Zealous and Wang have teamed up again for Soul Sides Volume Two: The Covers, set for release on May 22nd, 2007. Featuring fourteen rare tracks culled from the annals of soul, funk, and R&B, Volume Two, Zealous Records is heralding the album as “hard proof of the cultural and economic impact of the new audioblog medium.”
Wang, now an assistant professor of sociology at CSU-Long Beach, started Soul-Sides.com in 2003, years before blogs like Stereogum and Brooklyn Vegan were household names (in the homes of indie music fans, at least). He also co-maintains the pop culture/politics blog Poplicks.com.
