The hotel that usually hosts the Kentucky Derby kickoff party is an unusual place for a “grassroots music, art and activism festival,” but Louisville’s Forecastle Festival has outgrown its previous public park locations and gone urban. Now in its sixth year, the event’s main attractions will center on the Belvedere/Riverfront plaza with various downtown amenities like the Galt House Hotel providing additional space.
Forecastle organizers state their goal is an “activism centered” festival, and it appears they have succeeded. The number of environmental and philanthropic organizations is nearly three times the number of musicians, headlined by De La Soul, Girl Talk and Particle. The activism element is headlined by keynote speaker Skip Yowell of Jansport & Big City Mountaineers, who will undoubtedly rock out. Buckeye Forest Council is sure to bring a strong set as well. And ho-boy, do not miss Students Producing Organics Under the Sun; you will be telling your kids about that someday. Is there a such thing as energy-efficient pyrotechnics?
All kidding aside, sounds like a fun time benefitting some fine causes. The two-day festival begins Friday, July 27. Check out the links below for prices and a full schedule of events.
