Today, Warner Brothers releasted Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign to Save Darfur, a compilation featuring 23 John Lennon covers in genres varying so wildly that each contribution is initially stranger to imagine (ba dum CHA!) than the next. On the two-disc compilation you can find U2, R.E.M., Green Day, Avril Lavigne, Christina Aguilera, Los Lonely Boys, The Flaming Lips and Aerosmith.
Plus, for the rest of the day, 11 bonus tracks are available on iTunes from the likes of Duran Duran, Deftones and Gavin Rossdale. If that’s somehow still not enough, there’s an additional promotional dealie involving “exclusive access” to two more versions of “Imagine” by Josh Groban and Afro Reggae. Jack Johnson does the version on the actual CD (remember the actual CD? way back in the first paragraph?)
Yoko Ono donated the songs’ rights for the album, which will raise money for Amnesty International’s efforts to mobilize activism in Darfur.
"John Lennon was not just a famous Beatle, he was the social conscience of his generation," executive producer Jeff Ayeroff has stated. "By reinterpreting his music and reintroducing itto a new generation, we shine a light on the darkness that is Darfur.”
