New-waver-turned-folk-icon Peter Case will release his next solo album, Let Us Now Praise Sleepy John, on August 7. Named after Tennessee bluesman “Sleepy” John Estes, the Yep Roc Records LP will be his first set of original songs in five years.
Former frontman of the college-rock-essential Plimsouls, Case recently published the first installment of what will be his four-part autobiography. Titled As Far as You Can Get Without A Passport, the story so far covers his early busking days in San Francisco.
With Sleepy John, which features contributions from Englishman Richard Thompson, Carlos Guitaros and Chicana singer Lisa Flores, Case said he hopes to finally create a traditional solo work in the vein of Woodie Guthrie’s Dust Bowl Ballads.
“This is the album that my fans have been asking me to make for a long time and the record I’ve wanted to make for longer than that,” he said in a recent statement.
