Clip from Haynes’ biopic on Dylan leaked
A clip from the upcoming Todd Haynes film on Bob Dylan, I’m Not There, leaked on YouTube. The clip shows Cate Blanchett as Dylan speaking with Allen Ginsburg (David Cross):
Although it's almost certainly an instance of viral marketing, due to its initial source at Ain’t It Cool News, the clip still offers neat glimpse at the upcoming film. Cate Blanchett is only one of six actors who play Dylan, each during a different phase of his life. The other actors are Heath Ledger, Christian Bale, Richard Gere, Marcus Carl Franklin and Ben Wishaw. While photos of Blanchett as Dylan surfaced earlier, it is the first opportunity to see this odd casting choice in action.
This is not Todd Haynes’ first film about a songwriter, since he directed Velvet Goldmine based on a Ziggy Stardust era David Bowie-esque character, as well as a short film about Karen Carpenter done entirely with Barbie Dolls. Haynes is perhaps best known for his role in the “New Queer Cinema” movement of the early 90s, but his most recent film, the heavily Douglas Sirk-influenced Far from Heaven, gave him broader success.
Haynes’ biography of Dylan promises to be less exploitive than other recent biopics, not mentioning any names... Factory Girl, and is supposed to use a somewhat experimental narrative style in order to mimic Dylan’s songwriting. The film is set for release on September 21.
