Michael McDermott is a critically acclaimed singer-songwriter with a new album out in late August, but in the meantime, he has managed to invade the worlds of film and literature. And he didn’t even have to put on a costume or buy a typewriter.
If standing around your local record store and waiting for Noise From Words to hit the shelves on August 28 seems daunting, there are some other ways to get your fix. You can click here to download “No Words,” an exclusive free track from McDermott’s upcoming album. But if that’s not enough, you can also head to your multiplex to watch Ocean’s Thirteen.
Cast your gaze away from George and Brad for a moment, and look for a restaurant named Ling Su. According to McDermott, the movie’s screenwriters, Brian Koppelman and David Levien, named Ling Su “after a gal that I had dated when I was making my first album. Brian, David, Ling and I hung out some then. I met her after they dared me to go talk to her in a sushi bar in Westwood. This was their way of giving me a shout out.” And this wasn’t the first time McDermott was enshrined by the screenwriting pair; in their script for Rounders, Matt Damon’s character was named Mike McDermott.
Still, for a true McDermott diehard, a free download and a caper comedy may not be enough, so why not brush up on your Stephen King? After all, McDermott’s lyrics have appeared in Insomnia, and in Rose Madder, a character always wears a Michael McDermott shirt. Clearly, the singer-songwriter seems to have made his mark in movies and books, and on August 28, Noise From Words will surely take his music to a wider audience.
