This weekend, American Cinematheque in Hollywood will present the Mods and Rockers film festival, featuring documentaries and never-before-seen concert footage highlighting the half-century of Stax Records soulful existence. Most notable is the premier of Respect Yourself, a brand new PBS documentary by Morgan Neville and Robert Gordon that narrates the rise of the Memphis label, touching on its implications during the civil rights movement. It features interviews by Bono, Elvis Costello and Chuck D, who recently hosted the Stax 50th Anniversary Reunion Concert.
Sunday showcases the US premier of Stax Revue 1967, the only known full-length film of the titular show, recently found in a Norwegian television stations archive. Otis Redding and Sam & Dave were two headliners of that European performance.
