Smithsonian Folkways Recordings is getting ready to release Down Home Saturday Night, a compilation they believe traces the “evolution of the house party.” Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on your tastes and/or ironic nature, the album is void of Kid N Play, Martin Lawrence and Queen Latifah.
No, the house parties the Smithsonian folks get worked up over begins with the knee-slappin, grab yer pardner kind and moves on through swing, southside Chicago blues and zydeco. The 16-track disc comes out July 31 -- so get ready to put it on at the next big get-together, clear the beer pong table out of the way and do-si-do it like you mean it.
