The festival that pre-empts smartasses by calling itself Hippiefest begins next week in Toronto, Canada. Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Summer of Love, (which did not kick off in Canada, though must have found itself there eventually), Hippiefest features a handful of classic rockers for the parking price of some reunion shows (cheapest tickets are less than $30).
First off, you’ve got the Turtles, whose ’67 hit “Happy Together” knocked a Beatles song off the top of the chart. Mad respect. Then, the Zombies, who are far, far greater than the sum of their singles. Also performing: Iron Butterfly, Badfinger, Mitch Ryder, Country Joe McDonald, Mountain, Denny Lane of the Moody Blues, Felix Cavalier’s Rascals and Melanie.
Another way Hippiefest is stuck in the past is its total lack of online presence. No website, no MySpace. Does it even exist? Note: hippiefest.com is of no use. Look at those squares!
Some of the 21 shows differ slightly, so check the Shore Fire website below for specifics.
