With the release of Tankfarm Future Sounds 28 in October (featuring Magic Bullets, White Rabbits and Jamie T), the taste-making compilation series is announcing its recruitment of former Aftermath Records president Mike Lynn, credited with bringing the Game, Eve and Busta Rhymes to his old label. One assumes this will obviously help upcoming installments break new hip hop acts. Meanwhile, Future Sounds has also teamed up with former Red Bull CEO Dan Ginsberg, who, according to the redundantly named beveragenet.net, “encouraged his U.S. distributors to take the [Red Bull] brand from its current 2 cans per cap (700 million cans annually) to 10 cans over the next few years.” A man who once held much influence over university finals weeks everywhere is probably keen indeed when it comes to the youth market.
Future Sounds might interest those who find the upcoming Next compilation (the non-mainstream equivalent of Now That’s What I Call Music!) to be ironically titled, since it showcases old-news bands like the Shins, Bright Eyes and Yeah Yeah Yeahs. San Francisco DJ/manger Larry Little started Future Sounds in 2003, throwing together mixes of favorite new artists for his friends and music industry contacts. As former co-manager of the Killers, Little apparently has some credibility, which has helped him find distribution for his project as a free bonus gift wih Tankfarm clothing in retailers like Urban Outfitters.
