Self-proclaimed “Soul Sister No. 1” Sharon Jones is slated to make a big screen appearance in Denzel Washington’s upcoming Christmas-day film, The Great Debaters, an underdog drama based on a college professor in the 1930’s who inspired his students to form his African American institution’s first debate team and challenge Harvard. Jones will not be among those swapping rhetoric with preppie scum, however. Performing as juke joint singer Lila, she has a speaking part and is featured singing Lucille Bogan classic “That’s What My Baby Likes,” one of several songs she recorded for the soundtrack.
Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings release their new album, 100 Days, 100 Nights Oct. 2 on Daptone Records. Four days afterward, they'll kick off their fall tour with a headlining show at the Apollo Theatre.
