It seems like just yesterday that Brad Pitt announced he was leaving Darren Aronofsky's The Fountain, putting serious dampers in its production. So again comes the announcement that an actor is leaving Aronofsky's newest project, The Fighter, due again to scheduling projects, except this time the actor leaving is Matt Damon and the actor coming in to save things is... Brad Pitt. Which makes a kind of odd sense, given the talent and status of each actor, and allows Pitt to work with the director he expressed interest in years ago.
The Fighter is the story of Irishman Mickey Ward, a boxer who eventually became the world lightweight champion. Mickey himself will be played by Mark Wahlberg, while Pitt will play Mickey's half-brother who lost his career to drugs and accompanying robberies.
Set for production in fall 2008, it looks to be as big a departure from Aronofsky's previous work as The Fountain was from Requiem for a Dream.
