Death Cab begins new album in earnest

| | Comments (0)

The road to a completed album is one fraught with peril, especially when you’re a band as intensely beloved as Death Cab for Cutie. Ben Gibbard and Co. have only just finished pre-production on their new album, but Billboard and our good chums over at Pitchfork.com are already draped all over the band, trying to extract as many slivers of information as they can for its rabid fanbase.

Here’s the very preliminary scoop: Death Cab commences recording the follow up to 2005’s Plans in a week or two (mid-September, they say). The as-yet-untitled album should hit store shelves in spring 2008. That’s basically it so far. No Death Cab shows scheduled, either.

Billboard also reports there is “no timetable” for the next album by The Postal Service, Gibbard’s collaborative electro-pop project with Dntel’s Jimmy Tamborello. Sigh. Just keep staring wistfully out your window, Gibbard watchers.

Still, we’re happy to inform you that another Gibbard side project is seeing the light of day. Last year, the head Cutie labored over the original score to the documentary Kurt Cobain: About a Son. Now, after making the rounds at the festival circuit, the film is about to start hitting select cities in October. The original soundtrack features a Gibbard cover of Beat Happening’s “Indian Summer,” and is set for release tomorrow (Sept. 11) on Barsuk. It’s just a speck of Gibbard glory, but in this trying hour of Death Cab drought, we need all the hope we can get.
