For perhaps the first time ever a film is being distributed, right this minute, online before theaters or DVDs. Home, the pet project of Alan Cooke, is a documentary about New York City in specific and the concept of home in general, all from an immigrant's point of view. Mike Myers, Liam Neeson, Susan Sarandon and more contribute their own perspectives on the concept within the film.
Home initially premiered at Lincoln Center, but has been available online since September 11, ushering in a new form of film distribution. While films have obviously been available online for some time, both legally and illegally, the advent of a movie playing online rather than ever hitting theaters is a distribution model that would've been unthinkable a decade ago. Time will tell whether this will be successful or not, but props go to Cooke and his cohorts for being the first ones to give this a try.
