Poltergeist returns for 25th Anniversary

Poltergeist returns for 25th Anniversary

Given that contemporary horror flicks have staggered to such dreadful lows, and given that you can't throw a bag of popcorn at your local multiplex without hitting a bastardized remake of a classic, it's great to see a ghoulish old friend return to us unscathed.

Poltergeist, the film that cost the National Arbor Day Foundation about fifty years' worth of goodwill, will return to spook theaters nationwide on Oct. 4. It's a one-night-only deal, commemorating the film's silver anniversary. Unleashed in the summer of 1982, Poltergeist was co-written and produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by Tobe Hooper (of the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre). The film's cult following has since elevated it to a touchstone of modern horror. It's been much-emulated, but never equaled.

Visit FathomEvents.com to find a screening in your area. All showings will include 15-minute documentary on real-world paranormal activity.

Also coming through your TV on Oct. 9: a special 25th Anniversary Edition of the Poltergeist DVD.
