Bob Mould could have quit this game a long time ago - and almost did. Hüsker Dü's mid-'80s discography was enough to build a legacy that just about any songwriter would envy. The alt-pop euphoria of Mould's later group Sugar was enough to cement that legacy. In 1998, he announced a hiatus from rock music, focusing instead on electronic styles with 2002's Modulate. Well, as they say, you can't keep a good rock frontman down, and Mould's 2005 solo release Body of Song announced at least a partial return to his old guitar-slinging tricks.
Reading the press for Mould's upcoming District Line (out Feb. 5), it looks like Mould's firmly back in the rock saddle. He's got Fugazi's Brendan Canty drumming for him, and has signed to Anti- Records, home to fellow ace solo artists (and favorites around Paste HQ) Tom Waits, Neko Case, and Joe Henry.
Look for Mould on tour this fall.
