Date set for Robert Johnson festival

The Robert Johnson Blues Foundation has announced its next festival date as May 10, 2008, giving those looking to win the event's New Generation Award (and the Gibson guitar that comes with it) plenty of time to make a deal with the Devil. (Who, by the way, gave up the crossroads gig about 10 years ago when his spot became eight lanes and an overpass, and now sells a series of instructional VHS tapes. Instead of your soul, he now accepts three easy credit, check or money order installments of $19.99.)

Talented 12-18 year olds can apply through March 31, with more information at the foundation's official site. Awarding the winner is just one highlight of the festival, which takes place at the Copiah County fairgrounds in Gallman, Mississippi (near Johnson's hometown of Hazlehurst). An official lineup is a long way off, of course, but the page gives a rundown of last year's blues and gospel-centric festivities.

Said organizer Claud Johnson, Foundation president and son of Robert: "We feel it's our responsibility to not only honor my father's legacy, but also to contribute to the cultural and economic landscape in Mississippi." Funds raised from the festival will go toward helping aging Blues musicians, as well as projects to prevent high school drop-outs through art immersion programs.
