Todd Haynes’ Bob Dylan biopic has not even hit theaters, but its cultural impact continues growing. I’m Not There, which is released on Nov. 21, sports quite the soundtrack. The album is filled to with covers of Dylan songs by names big and small, including Eddie Vedder, Sonic Youth and the Black Keys.
Yesterday, Stereogum posted a cover of Dylan’s “Highway 61 Revisited” by none other than the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Karen O. The rendition is faithful and almost respectful, but it gets its swing and groove from the Million Dollar Bashers, a backing band that appears on many of the soundtrack’s jams, and which consists of Lee Ranaldo, Steve Shelley, Tom Verlaine, Nels Cline, Smokey Hormel, John Medeski and Dylan band bassist Tony Garnier. Yowza. It’s unclear whether the entire gang of legends appeared on “Highway 61,” but there’s definitely enough of them to make this particular track rock.
