Proving once again— shockingly— that it’s good for something other than sucking away hours of your life with the illusory promise of “social networking” (read: avoiding Zwinky ad-induced seizures while slogging through page after page of friend requests from Czech porn stars named “Trinka”), MySpace has announced the second installment of its Rock For Darfur concert series.
On the night of November 10th, 2007, a few dozen largehearted bands— including The Decemberists, Mutemath, Rogue Wave and a few less likely to be among your Top 8— will turn over proceeds from their previously scheduled engagements to the Save Darfur Coalition and Oxfam International to assist in the struggle to minimize the devastation of genocide wrought in Sudan.
“Oxfam will use the funds raised to help provide 500,000 people in Chad and the Darfur region of Sudan with basic supplies such as clean water, shelter, blankets, soap, and disease prevention programs,” the organization promised in an October 25th press release. The Save Darfur Coalition aims to raise awareness and motivate citizens around the world to organize and act out against the ongoing travesty.
If you’ve got tickets for any of the shows, you’ve already helped out. If not, or if you want to do more, you can host your own Darfur Dialogue session with family and friends using an official “tool kit” of videos, articles and other discussion-sparking materials— downloadable from the official Rock For Darfur MySpace page, natch.
Last year’s inaugural Rock For Darfur raised over $50,000 for the cause.
