Nirvana's unanticipated swan song on MTV's Unplugged stands as a pretty iconic performance. Okay, make that a ridiculously iconic performance. Surrounded by an almost funereal backdrop, Kurt Cobain and company proved that they didn't have to jack up the amps to make an impact, turning in haunting renditions of original tunes "Dumb" and "All Apologies," as well as excellent covers of David Bowie's "The Man Who Sold The World" and Meat Puppets' "Lake of Fire." Recorded just under five months before Cobain's suicide, the show took on a new weight when it first appeared on CD in November of 1994.
Considering its cultural importance, it's a bit surprising that the concert hasn't hit DVD or VHS in any official form yet.
*dramatic pause*
Until now! On Nov. 20, Nirvana's old label Geffen will release the full Unplugged show on DVD, in concert with MTV Networks and Universal Music Enterprises. The entire concert ran 66 minutes, but MTV only broadcast 44 of those. What was missing? Two songs, "Oh Me" and "Something In The Way," and plenty of stage banter. The DVD will also include bonus rehearsal and documentary footage. Universal's official press release for the DVD promises more information in the coming weeks.
Meanwhile, the impressionistic Cobain documentary About A Son is just starting to hit theaters across the nation. Visit the film's blog for release information.
