Possessed by a rebellious spirit, unencumbered by tradition and utterly unpredictable, Brazil's Os Mutantes blew their native country's music scene wide open four decades ago. Considering that so few have yet caught up with the Mutants' wild vision of pop music, it seems perfectly natural for the group to return to the world stage and claim some attention.
Led by the brothers Arnaldo Baptista and Sergio Dias, the group made its official return to the stage of London's Barbican in May of last year. On Nov. 13, David Byrne's Luaka Bop label will release a live CD of that comeback performance. But the bigger news from Billboard.com is the fact that the group is working on new material with another one of Brazil's finest.
"Tom Zé is my writing partner now and so far it has been really wonderful," Dias told Billboard. "We already have about seven or nine new tunes already."
Fittingly, Os Mutantes plan to unveil their new material on Jan. 25 in Sao Paolo, when the city celebrates the anniversary of its founding in 1554.
