Waxploitation readies Darfur charity compilation

| | Comments (0)

As a once-hip bassist once sang, "When the world is running down, you make the best of what's still around."

To be sure, the world has seen better days. In response, Waxploitation, the management company that backs Danger Mouse and his Gnarls Barkley project, is trying to make use of the best musicians around with its new series of Causes compilations. The first set, entitled Causes 1, brings together a group of indie-rock giants to help benefit non-profit organizations working in the war-torn Darfur region of the Sudan. Featuring rare and unreleased tracks from groups like Animal Collective, the Shins, Bright Eyes and many others, the album will be made available digitally on iTunes on Nov. 27. A CD version of the compilation is also available for pre-order at the Waxploitation website.

One hundred percent of the proceeds go to three non-profit organizations: Doctors Without Borders, Oxfam America, and Human Rights Watch. The album will only remain available for 90 days, in order to emphasize the urgency of the Darfur situation.

"It's not just a symbolic gesture," Waxploitation founder Jeff Antebi said via a press release. "These non-profits need help there now."
