As a band of good ol' Atlanta boys, Black Lips hold a special place in the hearts of Paste's staff. We always try to stay on top of whatever noxious schemes the group is brewing, whether that's rockin' the local strip club circuit, crusading in the Holy Land or just inspiring general silliness. So when they told us way back in July that they were signing aboard a movie called Let It Be, we were pretty stoked, albeit skeptical.
Finally, however, we have official confirmation from Springboard Films, the group behind the film project. Production on the movie doesn't begin until next May, but there's already a website up with some of the details. The plot calls on the Black Lips lads to play a fictional underground rock group called The Renegades, who must "navigate the choppy, cultural waters of the mid-late 1980s." Filming will take place throughout the Lips' stomping grounds in the American Southeast. The production staff includes producer Andrew Meyer (Fried Green Tomatoes, The Breakfast Club) and director Roger Rawlings (Neurotica).
In other news, the Black Lips will hit up (and destroy) a few Southeast venues in the near future:
