Two days ago, a YouTube commenter—a voice of inarguable critical authority—noted that “wayne waz corny back in dayz but now wayne gangsta n shyt now.” This modern-day Lester Bangs may have a point, but Chan “Cat Power” Marshall disagrees. In fact, Ms. Marshall is just fine with old school Lil’ Wayne (along with B.G., Young Turk, Juvenile and Baby Williams) because she will be covering the Hot Boys’ “I Feel” on her upcoming Jukebox, which will be released in January.
You may have heard about Jukebox before, but there have been some changes since we last posted. Cat Power has replaced Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Fortunate Son” and James Carr’s “Dark End of the Street” with Jessie Mae Hemphill’s “Lord, Help the Poor and Needy” and Joni Mitchell’s “Blue.”
But where do the Hot Boys come in? Why, they’re on the bonus disc that will be included with a limited-edition silver foil package. Covers of songs by Moby Grape, Nick Cave, Roberta Flack, and Patsy Cline round out the super-special limited edition. We’ll see what YouTube commenters have to say about this.
The final Jukebox tracklist:
1. New York (Frank Sinatra)
2. Ramblin’ (Wo)man (Hank Williams)
3. Metal Heart (Cat Power)
4. Silver Stallion (The Highwaymen)
5. Aretha, Sing One For Me (George Jackson)
6. Lost Someone (James Brown)
7. Lord, Help The Poor And Needy (Jessie Mae Hemphill)
8. I Believe In You (Bob Dylan)
9. Song To Bobby (Cat Power)
10. Don’t Explain (Billie Holiday)
11. Woman Left Lonely (Janis Joplin)
12. Blue (Joni Mitchell)
And the bonus disc:
1. I Feel (Hot Boys)
2. Naked, If I Want To (Moby Grape)
3. Breathless (Nick Cave)
4. Angelitos Negros (Roberta Flack)
5. She’s Got You (Patsy Cline)
