Unreleased Talking Heads premieres on KALX comp

David Byrne completists, now is the time to support KALX Berkley college radio. Pledge $75 to the station before 500 of your peers do the same, and you may snag up the limited edition thank-you gift of a 45th anniversary double 7” featuring, among other rarities, an unreleased live version of Talking Heads’ “Stay Hungry,” recorded in 1978 at the University’s Lower Proul Plaza. I daresay this puts complimentary tote bags to shame.

The release also contains evidence of the good work KALX has done in its 4.5 decades of existence. For example, in-studio recordings from Dengue Fever, Supersystem and Ride’s Mark Gardener. As for programming going on as of this writing, music director “Gatsby” just introduced a Constantines song as “another track by white dudes with guitars,” which he followed with Barbera and Ernie (“That made me pee a little bit, it was so good!” Gatsby noted) and Animal Collective. May this spot on the dial shine on, in some way or another, for 45 more years.

And, you know, in case they run out of the record, you can still get the temporary tats.

The official drive is over, but according to Pitchfork, the offer still stands, as long as supplies last.

Track list:

Talking Heads - "Stay Hungry"
(recorded 4/18/1978 at Lower Sproul Plaza, UC Berkeley)

Mark Gardener (from the band Ride) - "Vapour Trail"
(recorded 3/28/2003 at KALX Studios)

Dengue Fever - "Shave Your Beard"
(recorded 10/06/2005 at KALX Studios)

Supersystem - "Defcon"
(recorded 5/12/2005 at KALX Studios)
